The Myth of a Hypersexualized Culture
What many see as “degeneracy” is often asexuality masquerading as a fetish.
The below essay was published in the most recent issue of Evie Magazine.
Quite often on X and other platforms, you’ll see people using words like ‘degeneracy’ while complaining about what many believe is an overabundance of sexuality in America. At first glance, these complaints are understandable. I won’t burden you with the image of Lizzo on a Calvin Klein billboard in SoHo that replaced former Calvin Klein billboards with hot models. The rampant use of OnlyFans and the unspoken addiction to porn most men have on some level may also come to mind. If you walk into CVS, you might see anal vibrators or power dildos being sold an isle away from Aspirin and Listerine. It makes sense to come to this conclusion at first glance.
However, these relatively new phenomenons are the complete opposite of “hypersexual.” In fact, they’re anti-sexual. OnlyFans, porn, and sex toys are products used almost always in complete isolation. They’re tools used for coping with the existential pain of being, numbing feelings of lonliness, and replacing the void of chemistry and passion. A quick masturbation session feels better than facing the deptht of bottomless depression. I’m going to discuss why these phenomena are not only not hypersexual, but are decreasing sexuality as a whole.
