I’m once again seeing Millennials on X being the self-appointed spokesmen for Zoomers. It’s all very cringe - a way of being invented by Millennials. From what I can see, Millennials are using the plight of Zoomers to vent legitimate political grievances and their own career frustrations at Gen-X’ers. Millennials are being the advocate they wish they had after graduating under a mountain of student loan debt while holding a degree worth less than they were promised. Yes, Zoomers are getting the brunt end of a dying American dream, but Millennials got the first taste of it and are still pissed about it. That’s mostly what’s going on here.
I’ve read every point and counterpoint to this recurring debate. It’s the same debate that pops up every 6 months except now it’s exacerbated by RWers addiction to eating their own when there’s nothing else going on. Nick Land had the most useful contribution to this debate.
The Matt Walsh’s of the world are going to call Zoomers snowflakes and anons with no career aspirations are going to say all jobs below $300K are beneath them. There’s nothing new being said here.
Yes — the American workforce (not just Zoomers) are being undercut by scabs (Indians on H-1B Visas) and an inflow of millions of peasants. Inflation has been terrible. The housing market sucks. Salaries have been stagnant for decades. The jobs being offered after college aren’t glorious, and they never were. Unless you major in finance at an elite university or train yourself to become an incredible engineer by the time you graduate — the jobs waiting for you will be entry-level. The main difference now is you’re competing with Indians in an environment that is actively hostile towards straight white men (though increasingly less so). Regardless, the American economy isn’t great.
It could always be worse. You could have been born with a deformed dick, to heroin addict parents, or in India. You could be in jail in the UK because you spoke out against little girls being raped. You could have even been born Chinese. Wouldn’t that be terrible?
Expecting things to be handed to you simply because you exist is for communists. The men who founded America didn’t like their situation so they started a new country. One lesson to learn from our Founding Fathers is if you don’t like something, shut the fuck up and do something about it.
What are your options? Argue online until Daddy Trump sends back all of the illegals and suddenly $300K/year jobs where hot skinny interns will suck your dick at your desk will suddenly open up just for you? That’s not going to happen. Whether or not you think your options beneath you — those are your options. Your options are to play the cards you’re dealt, take someone else’s cards, demand the state give you better cards, or kill yourself. Welcome to America.
Most of the inflammation online is due to out-of-touch Gen X’ers telling Zoomers to be thankful for the opportunity to get a job at all. Millennials are, rightfully so, calling them out on this on behalf of Zoomers. This may be well-intentioned, but it doesn’t look helpful. Waxing poetic about how your part-time job was more fun than your real job doesn’t help anybody nor does ripping your hair out because Chris Rufo had a bad take. If I were a Zoomer watching all of this arguing, it would just make me feel even more hopeless than I probably already do. If you want to help someone, don’t make them feel powerless.
The options to make money for Americans are better than Europeans and most of the world. America is the pinnacle of capitalism. Everybody knows this. Are the conditions ideal right now? No. What are your options?
Here are some options just off the top of my head for anyone unsatisfied with their situation and unwilling to wait for Daddy to fix it for them:
